From Big City Heights
to Friday Night Lights: Gabriella Rowe and Ken Cohen
When you meet Gabriella Rowe and Ken Cohen you are met with an immediate blast of positive energy. The husband and wife duo, who moved to Houston from New York City two years ago to take over leadership roles at the globally recognized Village School, have a way of making you feel immediately ‘at home’ while inspiring and energizing you all in the same breath. Their individual careers and track records are enough to impress but the union of the two, create a very powerful and welcome force in the educational community of West Houston.
Deeply rooted and passionate about education, Gabriella lived in New York for the majority of her life, with the exception of her college years at prestigious Bryn Mawr College, and has a career that spans great success on Wall Street, Management Consulting, and then taking over her family’s business (a small pre-school on the Upper Westside of Manhattan).
Ken grew up in Boston and had a professional life that, before he joined Gabriella in her family’s school business, also saw 15 years of great success in various executive positions in strategy consulting and technology/software services. Ken holds a BA in Philosophy and Music from Lake Forest College and did his graduate studies at Harvard University and Bank Street College of Education.
Together, Ken and Gabriella, took her family’s existing pre-school and built it into a successful international education company right in the heart of the Big Apple: one of the most competitive educational environments in the country. Along the way, they welcomed two sons into the world: Julian (17) and Griffin (13) and soon the buzz of the city began to be replaced with footballs, baseballs and board games. In 2013 Gabriella was presented with the opportunity to sell the family business. What would come next after reaching the heights of success in New York City? The answer turned out to be Houston, Texas. Two years ago, Gabriella was invited to take the position as Head of School at The Village School here in the Energy Corridor; she and her family have not looked back since.
With almost 2000 students from around the world, The Village School has proven to be the perfect home for Gabriella, Ken and their 2 sons. Its rigorous academics, diverse and competitive athletics and rich arts programs have enabled her to draw on all of her “Big Apple” experience. In the two years since she has been at Village, the school has grown by over 400 students, built a dedicated early childhood and parenting center, launched a bilingual French/English program and opened a state-of-the-art turf football field and tennis courts. It is a very special place, one that is so unique and worthy of so many accolades that it does it a bit of an injustice to try to list them all. Anyone having the opportunity to tour the school, will be left in awe by the creativity, talent, and sophistication of this facility and its’ students.
Ironically, it is the pace of Houston and the focus on home life and love of community that has led Gabriella and Ken to call Houston “home” for good. And come Fall, on any given Friday night, you will find Gabriella and Ken, like any good Texas parents, pacing on the sidelines under the lights watching their beloved Village Vikings football team, passionately rooting for the team and for their son who now plays Quarterback.
